Lovely writing as always, Brant. What happened to AM radio? You mean EV’s expected phaseout? I hadn’t heard, so I looked it up.

I have a friend who in the 1980s developed an AM-based detection system that spanned the Atlantic Ocean in search of lightning (and thus storms). After all his efforts it unfortunately never got off the ground (or rather much off the surface of the ocean). ⚡️

Thank you! There is a link in my essay to a Washington Post article saying automakers plan to exclude AM radio from new car models. Naturally, the issue has become politicized, with Conservatives claiming this will silence Conservative talk shows found on that medium. But this argument baffles me. Any Conservative presently howling on AM radio would do well to segue over to internet-based podcasting where they will have a much broader audience and, at least for now, cannot be shut down.

Thanks. WP – the same paper you used to deliver. I was always an outlier: I delivered the Washington Star, which doesn’t exist anymore (it became the Moonie-owned and conservative Washington Times).

Music is the one thing that continues to human bring joy and unity, generation after generation. One could make a case that if we could hear the voice of God, it would be musical.

First sock hop at Frost intermediate? Ditto! So many parallels. Especially music. I got a crystal radio kit for Christmas in '68 and strung a wire out my bedroom window to the tree in the front yard as an antenna. Moving the pin around the crystal I could finally pick up WEEL AM in Fairfax. "Hey Jude" was number one that year & I listened to it during Casey Kasem's top 40 on that little radio. Ah, so many memories from all across the spectrum. Thank you for bringing them up! More to come soon
